The Sim

Green Mode

Starbase Eridani has the esteemed honour of being one of the few sims on the internet that follows the course of events depicted in the Destiny/Typhon Pact novels published by Pocket Books over the past couple of years, as most stories set in the Trek universe now work around these particular events. It is a splinter-universe of this timeline we now sim in, a spin-off of another sim in the same continuity, the USS Liberty Belle.

For those who don't know, this is where, in 2381, the Borg launched a massive invasion into the Alpha and Beta Quadrants in an attempt at destroying the Federation. However, after slaying billions, the Borg Collective was consumed by beings known as the Caeliar gestalt, thereby ending the Delta Quadrant menace once and for all.

However, this did not leave the galaxy in peace as it should have, with alliances fracturing, and new ones growing. To oppose the Federation, the Klingons and their allies, the Romulan Star Empire, Tzenkethi Coalition, Breen Confederacy, Gorn Hegemony, Tholian Assembly and the Holy Order of the Kinshaya grouped together in the "Typhon Pact". In response, the Khitomer Accords were expanded to include the Ferengi Alliance, the Cardassian Union and the Talarian Republic. (The Imperial Romulan State that had split from the mainstream were subsequently reabsorbed.)

This event led to a cold war-esque period of hostility between the opposing sides, each trying to trump the other in terms of technology, with the Pact sharing a large number of weapons, and the Accords having dominance over the quantum slipstream drive (exploration in the Delta Quadrant becoming more prominent). It is this 'cold war' that Starbase Eridani is a part of.

Of course, events after 2382 are currently speculation, and are now left to our team of writers to decide. What we do know, however, is that Romulus is no more as of 2387, and what this means for both the Typhon Pact and the Khitomer alliance is worrying, for will these alliances hold out?

Class History

During the early 2370's, Starfleet came to realise that while the Regula class of base gave it some flexibility in being able to rapidly deploy starbases, their starship support capabilties left something to be desired. After inheriting Deep Space 9, Starfleet was impressed at how the Cardassians had designed their bases to support starship operations. Starfleet began a series of projects to determine how best to incorporate some of the design principles of Deep Space 9 into their upcoming bases. The Ithaca class of base is one such example.

At first glance, the Ithaca bares a striking resemblence to the Nor series of bases used by the Cardassians. However, in a bid to reduce vulnerability and increase shield efficiency, the six docking ports placed on pylons by the Cardassians were directly integrated into the outer rings structure. To accomodate a reasonable amount of starships, without sacrificing too much space on the ring, the engineers utilised a double-ring arrangment. Six starships are capable of physically docking at the station, three on each ring.

The upper and lower rings are connected to the central section by means of three large "spokes" radiating out from the central core. Two large hangars were placed on the end of the spokes to accomodate small civilian traffic and incoming runabout sized vessels. The bases own auxillary craft are stored in these hangars and in the four hangar bays on the inner ring.

To accomodate large quantities of civilian and fleet personnel, the engineers decided the base would feature two large sections connected by a large vertical shaft which housed the fusion reactors and the primary life support functions. The spokes connect directly to the central shaft, and house additional crew quarters, labs and cargo storage. The inside of the outer ring sections also house cargo bays and quarters for visiting personnel and civilians.

The station also features an impressive amount of weapons and defensive systems. Following their success on DS9, it was decided to incorporate the retractable weapons pods used on there, as well as the more conventional Type XII phasers and torpedo launchers on the disk sections. There are 6 pods on each ring, and 2 on each spoke on the base, allowing the base to engage multiple targets with ease. Ablative armour covers critical sections of the base, and the base features a high-capacity shielding system with multiple-redundant generators. The bases shields also incorporate the metaphasic shielding technology to harden it against radiation events such as flares, ion storms, and cosmic radiation.

The first of the Ithaca class bases was built on the edge of the Calder system to replace Starbase 60 and guard the historic ruins on Calder II against further attack from pirates. Several other stations soon followed suit.

After the Borg Invasion of 2381, it was necessary to rebuild many lost stations along the Federation-Klingon-Romulan borders, particularly near and around the Azure Nebula and nearby star systems. Numerous Ithaca class stations began construction, alongside several Celestial and Stardock type stations, but the formation of the Typhon Pact necessitated a new angle for Starfleet.

At the behest of Starfleet Intelligence, a redesign of the Ithaca class was proposed, named Azure Class, of which only one has been completed. Starbase Eridani, a replacement for Starbase 234, is the first of its kind, utilising the designs of the Ithaca, but implementing the newest innovations in scientific research and development laboratories, communication and observation technology and improved long-range detection technology, at the expense of civilian lodging.

Manned almost purely by SI, SSO and R&D personnel, the Azure Class space station is intended as the Federation's vanguard in the Cold War with the Typhon Pact, as both an early warning system and as a platform for experimental technology and covert operations. Although still equipped with the necessary devices to refuel and repair starships, the Azure Class is not intended to cater for visitors or hospitality, and is purely an instrument of covert warfare and subterfuge.
